If Swaziland was the place where the well-to-do came to indulge a gambling habit which was anathema in the rather strait-laced at Calvinistic South Africa, Mauritius, only a few hours away by plane, was the Beautiful People’s playground. Lush and exotic, it was a tropical island paradise well on a par with the better known palm-fringed Edens such as Fiji or the Maldives – it was close enough for South Africans to treat it as a sort of private domain strategically dropped in place for their pleasure. The Christmas cruise of the Achille Lauro was an alternative method of gaining the place. We thought we had earned a real indulgence – the trip was not cheap, even with a cabin which wasn’t of the first rank, but it promised to be exciting.
